5. From 1970 to 1973, my wife and I worked with groups taking Christian literature behind the Iron Curtain and conducting conferences to train Christian leaders. Many of our contacts there would, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, become leaders of newly-formed democracies. One of our contacts was Cardinal Carol Woytila, who would later become Pope John Paul II. We were also able to help some escape to the West. But we also met false believers who, like Judas, Simon the Magician or Ananias and Sapphira, betrayed the faith and reported our visits to the communist authorities. My wife and I later served as missionaries to Russia from 1991 to 2007, working with the disabled and revising the Russian Bible.
