In the article "Albuquerque's Repub. mayor inspired Denver's Dem. mayor to employ homeless", the author writes - "Since his divorce about three years ago, 63-year-old Joey Martinez has been without a permanent home. He has slept on friend’s couches, in his ex-mother-in-law’s garage and in the most desperate of times, in Denver’s parks." He's been giving the lion's share of his $500 monthly pension to his 21-year-old-son to keep him in school, which meant Joey had to live on the street. But now Denver's mayor, Michael Hancock, is hiring day workers off the streets to give them jobs that pay more than minimum wage beautifying the city of Denver. This gives the former homeless the dignity of earning a paycheck as well as a place to live. It also connects them with various social service programs that help them get regular health care, reducing the number of expensive emergency room visits... and deaths from exposure or violence.
