In the article "Hey New York Times, This Is Why Uber Is Awesome," the author writes - "The New York Times has issued a major blast against the gig economy, and it has all the features of this genre of writing: find anything in the sector that might be improved, or is improving, and treat it as something government should crush immediately, regardless of the results for people who are actually choosing in favor of this form of market participation." Economic freedom is necessary for intellectual and spiritual freedom. Why? Because one's mind and spirit happen to reside in a physical body that can be constrained by overly restrictive laws and customs. When the U.S.A. was founded, we experienced great freedom to innovate in our work and create new forms of social interaction, which catapulted America to the forefront of the world's economies. But entrenched institutions often don't want to give up their control. These modern "gig" innovations like Uber, Lyft and Handy enable workers to become independent contractors and have their own business. Some workers have a hard time breaking from the "hired employee" mindset, and some old-school employers like taxi companies and newspapers feel threatened by independent on-call drivers and bloggers, so they try to create obstacles: they want to "own" you. But as a former independent contractor and now a blogger, I appreciate the freedom to control my income and express myself without a boss to shut me up or put me down.
