Last Sunday, bombs exploded in two Coptic Christian churches in Egypt, killing 45 worshipers and injuring scores of others. In the article "The Suffering Church Of Egypt," the author writes - "Do we American Christians care about them? It seems that our government has never given two flips about the welfare of Christans in the Middle East. What is the excuse of the American churches?" The Coptic Orthodox Church is very close to the Eastern Orthodox Church. In fact, some EO churches will offer Copts communion. The Copts broke with the Eastern Orthodox at the Council of Chalcedon in 451: the issue was whether the Word of God united with a particular human when Jesus the Messiah was conceived (Coptic doctrine), or the Word of God united with human nature and became Jesus the Messiah (EO doctrine). This gets into very technical definitions of Greek words, and some theologians now believe it was simply a misunderstanding over definitions: see the Wikipedia article. In any case, all Christians should offer comfort and shelter to other persecuted Christians. Individual congregations can offer Coptic churches in America help in protecting these persecuted Christians in Egypt and accepting those who decide to come to the U.S. It's not enough to think - "That's a good idea!" or feel sorry for persecuted Coptic Christians, or click the "Like" button - we must DO something: "Thy word shall not be false or empty, but fulfilled by action" (Didache 2:5). Empty words are the same as telling a lie. Read the full article to get the whole story! And subscribe below to get our free weekly newsletter: |
