In his recent article "Gallup On Post-Christian America," Rod Dreher states - "In The Benedict Option, I write: 'Today we can see that we’ve lost on every front and that the swift and relentless currents of secularism have overwhelmed our flimsy barriers. Hostile secular nihilism has won the day in our nation’s government, and the culture has turned powerfully against traditional Christians. We tell ourselves that these developments have been imposed by a liberal elite, because we find the truth intolerable: The American people, either actively or passively, approve.' " We are like the ostrich that sticks its head in the sand - "Maybe if I ignore this frightful thing, it will just go away..." But when you have cancer or a heart attack or a stroke, you ignore it at the risk of your very life. Continuing to live life as usual in the face of an immanent mortal threat is called "the normalcy bias" - thinking that everything will just continue as normal because that's the way it's been in the past. We humans are very susceptible to this bias. As someone said, "Doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results is the definition of insanity." We simply can't continue our "business as usual" worship, preaching, and teaching in our traditional Christian churches, expecting that the decline in morals, mindset, and membership continues to plummet. The moral degeneration in the West has been going on for about 100 years now, and has picked up speed since the "Sexual Revolution" and the Pill of the 1960s. We need to re-think and re-structure our traditional Christian outposts in the larger society like The Benedict Option describes, or be overrun by the encroaching dark forces.
