In his article "There Is No Plan B," Rod Dreher writes about a positive review of his book The Benedict Option: "... this isn’t the first time I’ve heard this critique regarding framing my program as an 'option'. I should clarify that I really don’t think Christians who want their descendants to come through this crisis with their faith intact have an alternative. My hope is that by the end of the book, readers will agree that in truth, there is no choice here.

I present it as an 'option' with reference to Alasdair MacIntyre'’s framing of the choice the early Benedictines made: to quit dedicating their energies to shoring up a failing social order, and instead focus on building up smaller communities within which it would be possible to live out their faith through the dark age to come."

Unfortunately, most Christians today refuse to believe there's anything drastically wrong with modern American society, that they can just keep on going to church, repeating the same rituals and everything will somehow be OK. But the truth is, we've slipped over the edge of the slippery slope and there's no going back - you can't slide uphill. Traditional / conservative / orthodox Christianity in America is no longer a majority worldview, and we are just kidding ourselves to dream of a "Plan B" - that the Republican Party will bring our Christianity back into the mainstream of American society.

Dreher's thesis is that we're entering a new Dark Ages that will last for generations, so we must preserve our traditional / conservative / orthodox Christian heritage in closely-knit communities, or else we will be swallowed up by the encroaching darkness. The youth born of Christian parents are leaving the faith - 60% or more of them - by high school graduation or early college years. Church attendance is shrinking as the older believers die and are not being replaced by the younger generation. There is no "Plan B." Get the book!
