In the article "These 13 Counties Started Work Requirements for Food Stamps. Here’s What Happened," the author writes - "In those 13 [Alabama] counties, enrollment in food stamps dropped over four months from 5,538 able-bodied adults without dependents to 831 such recipients." That's an 85% decrease in counties that "previously were exempt from enforcement of the federal work requirement for those participating in food stamps." And statewide in Alabama, the decrease was almost 50%. In Maine, "the number of those on food stamps who were able-bodied adults without dependents declined from 13,332 to 2,678." Waivers of the work requirement were enacted in 2009, which led to a 250% increase in the number of people on food stamps. But the new Federal administration is canceling those waivers. Food stamps have become a barter currency among low-income people. This is reinforced by big corporations: Amazon is reducing membership fees in its Prime service from $10.99/month to $5.99/month for people using their food stamps debit card. They did this to compete with Walmart, which rakes in $13 Billion/year from people using food stamps to buy anything they want, not just food. For those buying food with food stamps, the results are disappointing: read Food Stamps Are Making Recipients Fat and Sick. They eat more sweets and high-carb foods, drink more sugary liquids, and in general consume "a diet designed to produce obesity and diabetes."
