In his article "Tim Farron: Christian Canary In The Coalmine," Rod Dreher, author of The Benedict Option, writes - "Farron quit because the UK's secular establishment hounded him constantly about his Evangelical Christian faith. Liberals will say it won't happen here. Don't believe them. There is no reason to believe them at all. None. True, there are some liberals who oppose this intolerant, illiberal trend within their tribe, but they are not the determinative factor. Hear me clearly: Christians have to fight this politically and legally with all we have. But we also have to prepare for serious and painful trials ahead. The grounds for political and legal victories in the future are fast eroding." Even though Tim Farron holds predictably liberal views on such topics as abortion and homosexual relationships, the liberal Britsh press would not stop bombarding him with loaded questions about his Christian faith. Perhaps they saw the contraditions between what he professed to believe and what he supported politically. Or perhaps Tim Farron himself finally realized that he couldn't continue holding mutually contradictory positions in the spiritual and political spheres. In either case, whatever became of the old-fashioned definition of "liberal" that meant people are free to hold various viewpoints, both theological and political, that we should mutually respect people who hold differing worldviews and live together peacefully in society? This old-style liberalism has given way to a new, intolerant, illiberal pseudo-liberalism that ought rightly to be called Leftism.
