It certainly seems that these so-called "Christian thinkers" haven't read the book! In the article "Christian Thinkers Gather to Denounce Benedict Option," Emile Doak concludes with: "...what's offered in The Benedict Option is far from a neglect of civic responsibility. It's a recognition that the powerful forces at the very heart of our political culture are capable of de-Christianizing the Church; it's a roadmap for the fulfillment of civic responsibility in an authentically Christian way. If we are to fulfill this civic responsibility as Christians, we must first preserve Christianity from our political culture." Although the book's content very clearly does not call for a retreat from secular society into a monastery, the book's title might give that impression. The old saying "you shouldn't judge a book by its cover" may be true, but it's a fact that book covers and titles do help sell books. It seems, however, that these "Christian thinkers" couldn't get the first impresson made by the title out of their minds, if they even opened the cover and read the book. The main idea is that it's terribly difficult for one Christian or even a Christian family to withstand the onslaught of western society's post-Christian secular materialism and the confusing twists and turns of its ideologies. So the default postion for most Christians is "we shouldn't get involved in politics." But this just lets the world go to the devil. We need the support and encouragement of a community of committed Christians to take a firm stand and speak out in the public square about the Beauty, Truth, and Virtue of our traditional Christian faith (maybe Rod Dreher will use this for the title of his next book).
