 In his article "Iceland's 'new eugenics': Eliminating people with Down syndrome," Fr. Shenan Boquet writes - "A recent report from CBS proclaims that Iceland is, as they put it, 'on the verge of eliminating Down syndrome.' But how has Iceland achieved this seeming miracle of modern medicine? Peel back the cheerful headline, and one discovers a true Pandora’s box of horrors." The gut-wrenching reality is that doctors in Iceland - and many other countries including the U.S. - are "informing" pregnant mothers of the "option to abort" (which actually encourages them to do so). But the vast majority of parents who let their baby with Down syndrome live are glad they did, and these children lead happy and fulfilling lives. Eugenics is the same philosophy as reigned during Hitler's Third Reich: eliminating the unfit and undesirables - imbeciles, disabled and elderly people as well as Jews, Gypsies, Slavs, etc. Only the light-skinned and blue-eyed people were to be allowed to breed. But why prefer light-skinned and blue-eyed people? Why not reverse the rule? Or why not discriminate against people with red hair, or green eyes, or too-tall people, etc.? Society seems to prefer having its scapegoats, usually a minority group of people who share an identifying characteristic and can't defend themselves well. Then society can blame that minority for all of society's pent-up frustrations and social problems. But when that minority is exterminated, society must find another scapegoat upon which to vent its anger. And finally, there's no more society left.
