In the article "HHS to define human life as 'beginning at conception'," the new U.S. Department of Health and Human Services strategic plan for 2018-2022 states - "HHS accomplishes its mission through programs and initiatives that cover a wide spectrum of activities, serving and protecting Americans at every stage of life, beginning at conception." What a difference those five underlined words above make by being added to the current statement! Human life begins at conception: it's an established scientific fact that a new, unique human life begins at the moment of conception. Scientists have even observed a tiny flash of light when conception occurs. Could this be the divine spark, the "true light that enlightens everyone who comes into the world" (John 1:9)? 24 chromosomes from the mother combine with 24 chromosomes from the father to make a totally unique combination of genes that constitute a new human being. That genetic code is the instruction book for eye and hair color, height and weight, sex, mental ability, and physical strength, among many other traits. More development must take place, of course, both inside the womb and then for several years after the baby is born. But the fact is that a new human life has already begun at conception.
