Remember Kim Davis, the American registrar who in 2015 was imprisoned after she conscientiously refused to register same-sex marriages? A British grad student agreed with Kim: In the article "Court: Student can be expelled for calling gay 'marriage' a sin on Facebook," the author writes - "Felix expressed his Christian beliefs on the issue and argued that: 'same sex marriage is a sin whether we like it or not. It is God's words and man's sentiments would not change His words'. He was asked where in the Bible it says that same-sex marriage is wrong, and he quoted various passages to demonstrate this." Felix, while studying for his MA in Social Work at Sheffield University, got an email from an official there saying his Facebook post was under investigation. As it turned out, the investigatory panel - "chaired by Professor Marsh, an LGBT rights campaigner" - had him expelled from the university. The Christian Legal Centre took Felix's case to the High Court, which ruled the university had acted lawfully because his views "may have caused offence to some individuals." But the court waffled, stating: "Freedom of expression is an important right. Exercising that right to express the content of deeply held religious views deserves respect in a democratic and plural society, nowhere more so than in a university. Freedom of religious discourse is a public good of great importance and seriousness." And yet, the court ruled in favor of expelling Felix from the university, in effect barring his from his chosen profession.
