Challenge: Atheist Ethics Are Better Because Atheists Do Good 'For Nothing'

In his article "Challenge: Atheist Ethics Are Better Because Atheists Do Good 'For Nothing'," Tom Gilson writes - "This challenge came my way in a Stream comment not long ago. 'They say integrity is doing the right thing when nobody’s watching,' the critic began. But mythologists [Christians] believe that's never the case. I'll take the integrity of the rational good, who do the right thing without being coerced by the delusion they're being watched by an imaginary overseer."

This doesn't mean atheists are good for nothing: you may have heard the quip - "Pastors are paid to be good, but we laypeople are good for nothing!" No, all real Christians, not just laypeople, do good not for an earthly paycheck or a heavenly reward, but out of sincere love for God and a desire to please Him. I help my wife with setting the table, clearing dishes, taking out the trash, fixing things that break, etc. not for my own sake, but because I love her and it makes her happy.

It may be that atheists do good out of altruistic ideals, but we must ask where these ideals come from. Almost certainly the atheist has picked up the notion of altruism from a semi-Christian or other religious cultural background, even if he doesn't believe in a supernatural being. It's a well-known fact that countries which reject the idea of God and proclaim state atheism rather quickly degenerate into a selfish, brutal, man-as-animal societies.
