Everyone's First Amendment Rights, Not Just His |
In her article "Wedding Cake Baker's Backers Say Fight Is for Everyone's First Amendment Rights, Not Just His," Rachel del Guidice writes - "Christian and conservative leaders rallied Tuesday in support of a Colorado baker whose case was being heard at the Supreme Court for declining to make a custom wedding cake for a same-sex ceremony. "'Jack [Phillips] is simply asking the Supreme Court to protect his freedom of speech as a creative professional so that he does not have to express a message in his cake design that conflicts with his religious convictions about marriage,' Jennifer Marshall, vice president of the Institute for Family, Community, and Opportunity at The Heritage Foundation, said at the rally on the steps of the Supreme Court. "That freedom of expression is something that all creative artists value, no matter what their political and religious viewpoints [are],' she said." Freedom of religious expression and freedom of speech shall not be abridged, states the U.S. Constitution. But here we have a case in which a creative artist is being compelled by the State of Colorado to create an expression that directly contradicts his religious faith and violates his freedom of speech. It is no more legal to compel this expression than it would be to compel a Democrat to publicly endorse Donald Trump, to compel a Republican to publicly endorse Hillary Clinton, or to compel a Muslim to publicly confess Jesus Christ as God's Son.
