In his book review "A Loving Defense of Christian Morality: Why Opposing Abortion, Euthanasia and Sexual Immorality Promotes Human Welfare," Richard Reikart writes - "At first glance, some may think that the title of Nancy Pearcey’s new book, Love Thy Body: Answering Hard Questions About Life and Sexuality, is misguided. She is a Christian, after all. Aren't Christians the ones who despise the body and the physical world? "Pearcey replies with a resounding: No! She then turns the tables by showing that today it is secularists who reject the physical world and the body. How do they do this? By exalting consciousness or feelings above the physical body. They desire liberation from the shackles of the body. They want to choose their identity, no matter how much it conflicts with physical reality." Today's secularists aren't materialists in the traditional sense: they believe the pre-Christian doctrine of the Stoics that taught matter is evil and spirit is good. This is contradicted by the Creation story in the Bible, which tells us that God said - "It is good!" when He had created the material world and living creatures. And after He made Adam and Eve, the Lord said - "It is very good!" The false doctrine of mankind's total depravity feeds today's secularist notion that our physical bodies are evil and should be ignored. Human nature, weakened by the Fall, is prone to sin, but still capable of being good: see my section on Augustine.
