In his article "Washington backlash brews as Google, Facebook bully conservatives on social media," Doug Mainwaring writes - "A few tech giants control the vast majority of the flow of online [information]. Among these are Facebook, Google, Twitter, and YouTube (owned by Google), each dominating a different facet of the internet, and each in their own way presenting a very real existential threat to conservatives. "Together they hold a near-monopoly on the flow of information and news. As such, the are able with their complex algorithms to manipulate public discourse and limit free, unimpeded inquiry. These tech giants, fueled by a politically correct worldview, are ultimately able to undermine what it means to live in a democracy." But if a conservative administration institutes the regulation of these information distributors as public utilities in order to balance the left and right ideological viewpoints, what will happen when a "progressive" leftist administration takes control? It could easily use such regulation to promote their viewpoints to the total exclusion of any other. So conservatives are in a "sticky wicket" with no alternative ready at hand that is without risks. Meanwhile, Google's algorithms place your emails from conservative sources into your spam folder and Facebook's algorithms demote your posts so that very few people actually see them. Perhaps it's time for conservatives to start up their own social media platform. Get the whole story: read the full article & get our free weekly newsletter: subscribe below! |
