The Ministry Driven Church

Building Agape Restoration Communities

I'd like to give you my e-book The Ministry Driven Church, but first let me tell you a little about me: In 1957 when I was 14, I committed my life to serve Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord. The next summer, 60 years ago, while taking care of lawns at an apartment complex, the Lord gave me a vision: I saw a map of the Soviet Union in the sky and a voice said: "Remember this apartment complex plan - you'll build it when you're an old man." And I remember that there was something special about the stairs, but I didn't understand what it was. Now at age 75 I guess I'm old enough to start this new project!

The next year, I preached my first sermon at an inner-city mission, then I led our high school debate team to the state championship, I was elected president of our high school's YFC (Youth for Christ) club, I won the city-wide Denver YFC "preacher boy" contest and led and won the Bible quiz team contest on St. Paul's letter to the Galatians (I memorized all six chapters so I knew the answers). I also memorized lots of Shakespeare - big chunks of MacBeth, Julius Caesar, Romeo and Juliet - for English class.

Right after high school I went into the Army and learned Russian - we had to memorize 4-6 pages of conversational Russian every day. Realizing I was good at memorizing, I started memorizing Scripture: by now I've memorized most of the New Testament, many selections from the Old Testament, and now I'm finishing up the Book of Psalms, rotating between four languages.

After active duty in the Army, I enrolled in university and studied more languages, history and political science of Central and Eastern Europe. In my first two semesters I took 41 credit hours and got a 4.0 GPA. But then in my second year, while serving as president of the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship chapter on campus, I became acquainted with a wonderful, amazing young lady who was the IVCF chapter secretary and as they say, "the rest is history!" I graduated in three years with a 3.4 GPA.

After working a couple years to pay off college loans, my wife Cheryl and I served as missionaries to Central and Eastern Europe for 3.5 years, preaching, translating, proofreading, editing and printing Christian literature in many languages, taking Bibles, New Testaments and other Christian literature to Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox Christians behind the Iron Curtain. Both of our children were born abroad. [read more...]

The really big news is that Metropolitan Epiphany has been elected to lead the new Orthodox Church in Ukraine, as our first news article METROPOLITAN EPIPHANY OF "KIEV PATRIARCHATE" ELECTED AS LEADER OF "LOCAL ORTHODOX CHURCH" IN UKRAINE. This brings to a climax the many months of speculation about when and whether Ukraine would get its own autonomous Orthodox Church, free from control by Moscow. The one remaining step is for the new church's charter to be adopted, which is scheduled for next year on 6 January.

It is significant that, as reported in our news article LEADER OF NEW UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH ELECTED IN TWO ROUNDS – MEDIA, ten UOC(MP) bishops, each accompanied by a priest and a layman, participated in today's council to elect a leader for the new Orthodox Church in Ukraine. This indicates a shift not only in the personal loyalties of these bishops and those who accompanied them, but also in public opinion. Indeed, other sources tell of many Ukrainian laypeople leaving the UOC(MP) to attend the Kyiv Patriarchate churches. In addition, now that the Kyiv Patriarchate's lack of canonical recognition has been cleared up, we will likely see many more Ukrainians make the switch.

Our first news headline EVANGELICAL PROTESTANT CHURCHES APPROACH COUNCIL OF EUROPE OVER BULGARIA'S RELIGIONS ACT AMENDMENTS is concerned with a "proposed law requires newly registered denominations to have at least 3000 members before they can gain legal rights, discriminating against smaller minority groups" - thus effectively making illegal the smaller denominations that can't meet this numberical threshhold.

The fifth news article MAKING DEATH EASIER MAKES LIFE HARDER, coupled with the ninth news headline SOVIET DISSIDENTS AND THE WEAPONIZATION OF PSYCHIATRY – OPED, aptly illustrate the dilemma of modern, socialist-materialist society: by sticking certain groups of human beings into "crazy" or "demented" categories, it's easier to write them off and dispose of them. After all, if one's value consists only of one's economic contribution society, how can people object?

NOW, THE NEWS:

METROPOLITAN EPIPHANY OF "KIEV PATRIARCHATE" ELECTED AS LEADER OF "LOCAL ORTHODOX CHURCH" IN UKRAINE
from: Interfax-Religion

Metr. Epiphany (15 Dec.) Epiphany Dumenko has been elected as the leader of the "local Orthodox Church and Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine," Culture Minister Yevgeny Nishchuk announced from the stage on the square in front of the St. Sophia Cathedral on Saturday.

His announcement was made as President Pyotr Poroshenko, Verkhovnaya Rada Speaker Andrey Parubiy and the Ecumenical Patriarch's representative Metropolitan Emmanuel of France were leaving the cathedral to the sound of its belfry. Poroshenko announced the creation of the "Ukrainian local Orthodox autocephalous church" to the assembled.

"Congratulations everyone on the creation of the Ukrainian local autocephalous Orthodox church, which has just taken place at Saint Sophia's [Cathedral]," he said. [read more...]

BELARUS: ORDER GIVEN NOT TO REGISTER NEW RELIGIOUS COMMUNITIES?
by Olga Glace: Forum 18 News Service

Forum18 News Service (11 Dec.) In Belarus' capital Minsk, the Pentecostal Your Will Be Done Church has felt unable to meet for worship for fear of punishment, as officials found different reasons to reject its four registration applications since 2017. One rejection claimed the Church's faith was "unknown in Belarus." "We want to comply with the law and gather for religious meetings without fear of raids, fines or detentions," Pastor Vyacheslav Novakovsky told Forum 18. After one rejection, a Minsk city official told the pastor: "There's an order from superiors not to register any new communities." The official refused to tell Forum 18 if this is indeed the case. She insisted the registration rejections were up to the Church to resolve. A district official told the city authorities that new religious communities were not needed because the population was not increasing.

Communities of the Belarusian Autocephalous Church have given up any hope of getting state registration – and thus permission to exercise freedom of religion or belief legally. Their last rejected application was in 2014. "Obtaining registration is a waste of time and unnecessary trouble for our people," a priest told Forum 18. They have to meet for worship in homes or, in summer, in the woods. [read more...]

PETRO POROSHENKO TO PARTICIPANTS OF UNIFICATION COUNCIL: UKRAINE'S FUTURE DEPENDS ON YOU
from: Religious Information Service of Ukraine

Poroshenko at church council (15 Dec.) Speaking at St. Sophia, where the Unification Council took place, Petro Poroshenko wished its participants fruitful work.

"I appeal directly to all of you, members of the Council, to the hierarchs of Churches. This is a colossal responsibility that rests on you at this moment. The state, I reiterate, did everything it could on its part. Now, the future of Ukraine, the future of our great nation, our freedom, our state and spiritual independence depends on you and only on you. You must approve the Charter. You must choose the Primate, and the Tomos is already waiting for the Primate in the Phanar. So everything depends on your ability to come to agreement, on your ability to hear each other, to hear for the sake of Ukraine," the President invoked.

In his address to the members of the Cathedral, Poroshenko reminded how the process of creating the Local Church began, but today, according to the President, the last step in the "millenial history of a great dream" is being made. The President once again thanked Patriarch Bartholomew for his wisdom and courage in making the decision to grant the Tomos for the Church in Ukraine. [read more...]

LEADER OF NEW UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH ELECTED IN TWO ROUNDS – MEDIA
from: Unian

St. Sophia Cathedral (15 Dec.) The unification council was attended by such honored guests as Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andriy Parubiy. St Sophia's Cathedral was the venue of the event.

Some 192 delegates took part in the unification council of the Orthodox churches in Kyiv on December 15: they announced the creation of a new, unified, independent Orthodox Church in Ukraine, approve its charter, and elect its leader in two rounds. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate was represented by 42 hierarchs with a priest and a layman each – a total of 126 delegates, a source from the organizers of the event told the e-zine Ukrayinska Pravda.

The Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church confirmed the participation of 12 bishops and each would bring a priest and a layman with them, that is, 36 delegates. "The Moscow Patriarchate has confirmed the participation of 10 bishops – each with a priest and a layman. In total, 30 people," the source said. In total, according to preliminary calculations by the Exarchs of the Ecumenical Patriarch, 64 bishops, 64 priests and 64 laymen will take part in the unification council, thus their total number will be 192.

During the council, there was a secret ballot to elect the Primate, the leader of the church. There was two rounds, the first round - a ratings ballot. Three candidates with the highest number of votes of the participants in the council would compete in the second round, and the Primate was elected from among them. [read more...]

MAKING DEATH EASIER MAKES LIFE HARDER
from: Public Discourse

assisted suicide (19 Sep.) Easing access to suicide continues to be debated, usually in discussions of the legalization of assisted suicide (now often called euphemistically “aid in dying”). But there is an argument that may not be heard in such debates: by making death easier, we make life harder. Once suicide becomes readily available and accepted, dependent persons who refuse to choose death will be blamed for voluntarily burdening their caregivers, and for burdening society as well, thus filling the end of their lives with new sorts of suffering.

Yet this is not the harm ordinarily articulated by opponents of assisted suicide. They most commonly argue, rightly, that making a deadly drug available to dependent persons risks life itself by exposing vulnerable persons to pressure or coercion aiming at death. But they often fail to mention the other great harm that results from any “right to die”: facilitating suicide endangers not just ailing or moribund bodies but the quality of ongoing human relationships.

Should Some Lives Be Deemed Expendable?

When choosing to die is not seen as an option, we are able to imagine those who battle against serious illness or disabling conditions to be heroes struggling against an implacable fate. Their lives and their deaths are full of a meaning ready to be discovered by them and those around them. If an ailing grandmother fights to live on, despite her pain and her disabilities, she can be the object of sympathy in her misfortunes. Insurance or governmental aid can seem to be well-deserved. Indeed, she may so inspire her family, friends, and neighbors that they feel privileged to share in some of her frustrations as they care for her. They can feel solidarity with her, and with each other, as they fight back at her side. When death finally comes, the grandmother’s last experiences and the lasting memories of her caregivers can be of a network of persons bound together in her honor.

By contrast, the right of a severely infirm person to assisted suicide (or to voluntary euthanasia) means that the person’s life has been deemed especially expendable, that his or her continued existence is legally less important than that of healthy human beings (whose lives are still protected against suicide). Disability groups have long pointed out that one reason assisted suicide is popular is that people who are severely disabled are just not very important to many of us. We may not really care whether they get pressured into killing themselves. If they choose instead to live, they do so knowing that they do not count for much any more. [read more...]

BELARUS: FINED FOR SINGING, OFFERING RELIGIOUS LITERATURE
by Olga Glace: Forum 18 News Service

Forum18 News Service (12 Dec.) One year after a Baptist husband and wife were last detained and fined at the same location, police in the north-eastern town of Lepel again detained them to stop them singing Christian songs and offering literature outside the market. The couple were each fined about one month's average local wages on 30 October. "We were detained like criminals and brought to the police station for records of an offence to be drawn up against us," Andrei Fokin complained to Forum 18.

The couple were punished for violating the government's strict restrictions on public meetings or events. Andrei and Tatyana Fokin – who belong to the Council of Churches Baptists, which chooses not to seek state registration – insisted that they were not sharing their faith on behalf of any organisation. In fining them, the court rejected their arguments.

Council of Churches Baptists have a policy of not paying fines imposed to punish them for exercising freedom of religion or belief. Fokin is challenging a lower court order approving listing his property for possible confiscation and banning him from driving until he pays two fines imposed after the 2017 detentions. The fine imposed on his wife Tatyana in 2017 was taken from her salary in 2018 [read more...]

Transformed Into His Likeness

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit! Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever!

(description of photo)"The Word became flesh, and dwelled among us. We beheld His glory, such glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth" (John 1:14). Right at the beginning of his Gospel, the Apostle John describes the glory of Jesus Christ. A bit farther in this chapter, John tells us how that glory was revealed: "I saw the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained on Him. ...I have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God" (verses 32 & 34). This is the first "Epiphany" (revelation) of Jesus as the Son of God in His glory.

In Luke 9:28–36 we read of the Transfiguration of Christ - "As He was praying, the appearance of His face was altered, and His clothing became white and dazzling." This transfiguration is very likely what John was referring to in John 1:14, when Peter, James and John beheld His glory. St. Peter testifies of the Transfiguration - "For He received from God the Father honor and glory, when the voice came to Him from the Majestic Glory, 'This is my beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased'" (2 Peter 1:17).

And Christ intends to share His glory with us - "Seeing that His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and virtue; by which he has granted to us his exceedingly great and precious promises; that through these you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world by lust" (verses 3-4). This is St. Peter's testimony on participating in Christ's glory.

Next, St. Paul also testifies on the topic of transformation - "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God" (Romans 12:2). The Greek word here for "transformed" is metamorphousthe, the same word used for "transfigured" in Luke 9. So it is the same process, the same action of God's Spirit both in Christ and in us.

After Moses received the Ten Commandments from God, he came down from Mt. Sinai and, having been in the presence of God, his face was shining with glory so much that he had to put a veil on his face because the Israelites couldn't bear to look at the brightness (Exodus 34:35). As St. Paul writes, however, in 1 Corinthians 3:16 & 18 - "But whenever one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. ...But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord, the Spirit." Christ's glory in us is far greater than the glory that shone on the face of Moses!

As a side note, I should explain that the Church Fathers make a distinction between God's image in all mankind and His likeness in Christ's followers. Here's an analogy: the image is similar to the blueprint or plan or design, but the likeness is the way that a specific house or car follows the blueprint or plan or design. For example, a new Mercedes car is in the Mercedes image, but if it gets in a bad wreck it may no longer be in the Mercedes likeness. Similarly, all people are in the image of God... but if they wreck their lives, they may no longer reflect God's likeness. Christ came, however, to restore or transform us back into the divine likeness.

We can't know exactly what this will be like because it is beyond our earthly experience, but St. John tells us - "Beloved, now we are children of God, and it is not yet revealed what we will be. But we know that, when He is revealed, we will be like Him; for we will see Him just as He is" (1 John 3:2). And St. Paul tells us - "For whom He [God] foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers" (Romans 8:29).

Paul also wrote - "For our citizenship is in heaven, from where we also wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; Who will change the body of our humiliation to be conformed to the body of His glory, according to the working by which He is able even to subject all things to Himself" (Philippians 3:20-21). And also - "For in Him [Christ] all the fullness of the Godhead dwells bodily, and you have this fullness in him, who is the head of all principality and power" (Colossians 3:9-10).

In conclusion, this should be our goal: "Christ also loved the Church, and gave Himself up for it; that He might sanctify it, having cleansed it by the washing of water with the word, that He might present the Church to Himself glorious, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish" (Ephesians 5:25b-27).

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit! Christ is among us! He is and ever shall be!
