Did you know that the first-century Church was liturgical? Yes, the early Christians borrowed much of their style of worship from the Jewish synagogue. So for example, the early Christians had a scroll of the Gospels (the "codex" - bound book - hadn't been invented yet), a seven-lamp menorah, and table settings for their new version of the sacred Passover meal – the Eucharist – on the altar, and you'd hear chanting and bells, and smell incense, much like in a synagogue. You'll still find these in the ancient Eastern Orthodox Christian Church today (but also electricity, indoor plumbing and central heating ...usually).
