This excerpt is from the book Breaking with Communism: The Intellectual Odyssey of Bertram D. Wolfe (p. 101) by Robert Hessen. It aptly describes what occurs when atheists who retain a slight remnant of Christian morality try to stand up for "justice" or "truth" against the head atheists (in this case Stalin) who have no remnant of Christian morality.
The original phrase arose out of the French Revolution which had rejected Christianity, when many of its leaders were themselves executed after they had murdered tens of thousands of priests and bishops.
